The speed of vertical propagation of flame on fabrics is discussed in terms of heat transfer. It is shown that condition along the fabric can be neglected and that a simple heat balance equation can be derived. From this it follows that the speed is inversely proportional to mass per unit area, which agrees with experiment. The quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is satisfactory.
