ABSTRACT
A preliminary analysis shows that there were 290 343 fires attended by fire brigades in the United Kingdom in 1972. Fatal casualties reached an all-time high of 952 of which 12 were fire brigade personnel (seven in one fire); the number of non-fatal casualties was 5963. The direct financial loss due to fire in the United Kingdom was estimated by the British Insurance Association as £141.2 M.
