The Detection Of Fires In Micro-gravity

Shipp, M. and Spearpoint, M., 1994. The Detection Of Fires In Micro-gravity. Fire Safety Science 4: 739-750. doi:10.3801/IAFSS.FSS.4-739

ABSTRACT

This paper describes a series of experiments carried out during parabolic flights to investigate the behavior of fires in micro-gravity. Video recordings and the output from a range of instruments were recorded and analyzed. The study shows how different types of flame detector respond to the combustion of various fuel types. The results will be used to aid in the specification and design of the fire detection and suppression system for the European Space Agency space station Columbus.
